Artist's Comments

Being rather sucked in by all the Trafalgar 200 bicentenary celebrations back in October 2005, I ended up creating this piece; a somewhat characterized portrait of Admiral Nelson. I felt that Nelson, of course being the beloved naval hero fondly admired by the British public, deserved some artistic attention. So here he is, dum de dum dum dum ta daaa!!! This was drawn freehand and coloured entirely within Photoshop and I was glad for the practice and rather pleased with the resulting fleshy tones. Sadly, however, I may have gone overboard with the shading of the uniform. I’d like to think that there is a certain resemblance, however, nobody can really be sure of what Nelson truly looked like in real life (considering the multiple tiny differences within his many painted portraits). All that’s left for us are rather romanticized hints.

Cool- being a Canadian, British naval history is a little obscure, but Nelson had a lot to do with searching for the NorthWest Passage, so I know this guy.

Yes he does.

^_^* You'll have to excuse me, I'm a little bit of a Nelson buff to be honest. I don't think there is a single person over here who doesn't know Nelson, however, I realise he may be a rather misty figure in other places. I just wanted to have some fun and thanks for taking the time out to post by the way!

Military history is one of my favorite subjects, but embarrassingly, it's just such a HUGE subject and I know surprisingly little about it... Most of my information is on WWII... And unfortunately, I *do* know *of* this guy, but hardly a thing about him. :(

One thing I love about the olden days of the military is the uniforms, and specifically, I really admire the old British uniforms. They are so artistic, almost frivolous in a sense... and I love that!

Here is an artist that may interest you greatly:

I personally, love here artwork, and what's more... Is also I adore Siamese cats, so booya!

And, as for the drawing; you are a very talented person... You seem to be just as talented at drawing humans as you are at drawing anthropomorphic animals. Not to mention your mastery of being able to produce many different and distinct styles. Simply amazing... I'm predicting that soon enough you are going to be some seriously hot stuff here on DA, and won't have time to get into discourses like this one anymore. :(

The shades are just perfect to me... The key to dramatic and (frankly) interesting artwork is the ability to contrast. If it's a black and white drawing, you should try and *have* black and white... if you're coloring, try for complimentary colors... like orange and blue, green and red, purple and yellow.

But you no doubt know all this! Who do I think I'm talking to after all? But the uniform has a sorta silky appearance to it, which suggests royalty and veneration, hence, *importance*, which he is most verily… So, in gist, I think it's perfect as is.

I'm very sorry for talking so much, but it's just rare for me to talk to amazingly talented people here on DA, because by the time I get to them, they are usually super popular and have like hundreds of comments already.

*shuts up now*

Ha ha, well if it makes you feel any better, I couldn't remember very much until I read the Nelson biography. Now I can quote dates and make others feel uneducated... LOL! Only kidding...

It's funny you should mention Meezer's (Winged Siamese) work, as I have also come across her artworks before. As I remember, I applauded her for taking such an interest in that area of history (I was equally surprised to find an American with such a huge interest in British uniform). She manages to do the details of the Redcoat uniforms amazingly well. *Laughs* Someone asked me a while back, 'if you were to wear any sort of uniform, which would it be?' I said I'd wear the uniform of a 64th Reg of Foot British Redcoat. When asked why, I said 'so that if I got shot, no-one would see anything except my good humour'. I know, it was a bad joke. You'd probably get it if you met me in person.

Btw, You flatter me and I'm not too sure if it's good for my health... or my big head (lol). I really don't see myself with that many comments. They'll probably get tired of me yabbering on and on and on and.... yep!

Anyway, I've also now added you to my friends list. I don't know if that helps with the traffic flow to your gallery, but it helps me to get there easily anyway!
:iconlupinator:
Yeah, Meezer's art is amazing, and from what I can tell, she looks to be pretty proud of what she does (British reinactor). It's good ot be passionate in everything you do, I admire her for that.

Well, I'll never get tired of hearing you talk if you don't get tired of hearing me talk. And I'm gonna flatter the crap outta ya now, so get used to it. ;P Plus egos = *glee*

Speaking of egos, mine is at some kinda rediculas level now that you +watched me! Thank you so much!

Hee hee... no problem. And I think I found an icon to sum our conversation up! > :blahblah:

Ah Crap! You've accrued more site views in three days than I have in a month and a half. *spazes*

Ok Lupinator, here: :shamrock: You can have my lucky shamrock... for, err... luck!

That makes me feel really guilty. I'd love for everyone to stop glomping at one page and visit all the people in my faves pics gallery. I'm not sure if I can keep posting to meet people's expectations. *Cries* Oh, the couch looks too inviting at the moment. I'm just going to be lazy.... ^_^

*is lucky* I'm a quarter Irish you know.

And what'd I tell ya? I knew you were gonna be popular quickly, you can't blame people for wanting to see the "main attraction" instead of the "side shows" (and in my case, the "freak show") in your favorites. Enjoy the popularity, take a break, and be lazy, you deserve it.
