The Man Who Laughs Sketches by Leopreston The Man Who Laughs Sketches by Leopreston
Various sketches of characters from 'The Man Who Laughs', Hugo's obscure yet truly brilliant novel.

I have a copy of the book in my possession now and that means that I just can't help but draw what I see in my mind as I read it! Actually, I'm delighted at how the characters are coming along, because shortly after producing the 'Love is Blind' piece, I went looking for images of Gwynplaine etc... and came across this sketch that Hugo himself drew: [link] I think I'm going in the right direction, don't you? Ha ha! I had doubts over my perception of that smile, but, well, Hugo's works are often so descriptive it's hard not to see everything as he would have it (although Ursus looks a little 'mad scientist' here!).

Btw, I must apologise for the break in the middle of the page. These sketches were drawn in my new Moleskine and I was determined to make the most of the 'lies flat' feature. It's funny, because I had always thought these books to be overrated, but they are nothing of the sort now that I'm using one. The pages are like butter... butter I tell you! I'm also growing jealous as I think my pencil is having an affair with the paper...

Ha ha ha! Ok, enough of my blabber. I'll leave you with this little thing that's been amusing me far too much now: [link] :D

Yes, don't forget to breathe whatever you do!! XD

Ha ha ha, well, I've reached the part in the book where Gwynplaine is considering the plight of the poor and Ursus is telling him to just have lots of kids (XD). He calls Gwynplaine so many terrible names, and although I know he's just being silly about it, this kind of came across in his look there.

Ha ha ha, I love him really!

Actually, "don't forget to breathe whatever you do" sounds a LOT like something Ursus would say to his audiences.

I also loved the dialogue about the wapentake - What's a wapentake? The bailiff of the hundred! What's that? The praecipitus hundredi! What's he holding? The iron weapon! Okayyyy...what's that? A thing made of iron!

Ha ha ha, so it does! Only... it'd also have to have a few random philosophical words thrown in there for good measure! XD

I've just now reached the wapentake dialogue... ha ha ha, and I didn't half laugh! Especially since Gwynplaine mentioned at the start the man was carrying a mace, then asks what it is that he's carrying. Ha ha ha, I love Hugo's humour. He seems to repeat, and yet he loved it. :D

A thing made of iron! Ha ha! Thing...

I've actually been writing down some of the medieval superstitions that come up in Ursus' rants to research them later - stuff like a dead child being able to speak to St Augustine because of an inscribed brass plate under his tongue? Weird wacky stuff.

Ursus would be such a pain in real life, you know it.

Ha ha, great idea! And I bet half of them are out there, recorded somewhere. Ha ha, the chapter where he had to defend himself against the three doctors was full of that stuff.

Oh yes, I bet he would be. I'd liken him to the uncle you invite to the BBQ and then wish he'd just leave! XD

Oh, and here's a sneak peak of something that I'll only show you and you alone: [link] I have no idea where this is going, but as I said before, you got me hooked! It's nice to be painting something digitally again! :)

Hooray! :) Then you'll love how it looks now! :3 Buuut, I'll save that one for later! Tee hee! Really though, I've totally fallen in love with his character. How can anyone not love Gwynplaine? I've got to the part in the book now where Josiana is all over him. Jeez woman, you're all arms and... boobs? XD

OH! And the things Ursus utters... about Dea dieing! I just have to tell myself he doesn't mean it... :(
